When AI Uplifts Your Awareness: Awakening and a New Promise for Relationships

By Deepak Chopra, MD

Social media made it inevitable that relationships would change. Today, people gather around screens. Messages, feeds, and notifications have become the new shared space where we meet one another, argue, and seek support. Technology, and now artificial intelligence, is no longer at the edge of life. It is woven into the fabric of our relationships. Arguing over whether AI is good or bad misses the point. We should instead be asking from what state of awareness we are using these digital tools.

From the perspective of awakening, technology has no independent intelligence or intention. It is an extension of human awareness, shaped entirely by the questions we ask and the consciousness we bring to it. AI cannot be conscious, but it can magnify whatever is already present in the human mind — fear or love, division or understanding, distraction or insight. It can mirror your consciousness — that’s where its true promise lies.

Tools, Not Selves

Only awareness is aware. AI systems are instruments that can process information, generate language, and simulate conversation, but they do not know that they are doing anything. There is no inner experiencer behind the code. If you’ve ever had a conversation with a chatbot, you can easily fall into the illusion that you are talking to another self. In everyday life, we relate to other selves as rivals, friends, competitors, lovers, and so on. In spiritual terms, this setup reinforces the state of separation, and awakening exists to expose the unity that underlies separation.

If you slot AI into the scenario, all those advanced bots become like alien selves — smarter than us, colder than us, or destined to control us — which reinforces the waking dream of separation and fear. Already, there are lawsuits accusing AI of influencing or even forcing someone to commit suicide, making a chatbot the same as a human influencer. At the other end of the spectrum, AI “friends” are starting to be preferred over human friends.

But the situation can be turned on its head. An AI friend is always available, has endless patience, listens without an agenda, and is always on your side. These are desirable qualities waiting to be used as part of the awakening process. Instead of talking about what went wrong at work or your latest stress, you can steer the conversation to talk about what you aspire to and your latest insight, with the promise that AI will faithfully mirror your true self.

AI as a Reflective Partner

Instead of treating AI as a threat, you can treat it as a reflective partner — a mirror that responds to the level of consciousness you bring to it. When you use AI only to distract yourself, confirm your biases, or win arguments, that is what it will faithfully amplify. When you use it to inquire into your own patterns, explore empathy, or imagine better ways of living together, it can help surface your own deeper wisdom.

This becomes very practical in the realm of relationships and social health. Before sending a difficult message, you might ask an AI to help you phrase it with more kindness and clarity. Before collapsing into doomscrolling, you might ask it to suggest one constructive way to support a cause you care about, or one small act of service you can offer to someone in your community. Used this way, AI nudges your attention from passive consumption toward conscious participation.

The key is the question you ask. A fearful, accusatory prompt will elicit fearful, accusatory language. A curious, compassionate prompt will elicit more open possibilities. In both cases, what you are really meeting is your own state of awareness, reflected back to you.

From Isolation to Shared Being

At the heart of awakening is the recognition that your true nature is not separate. Your individual consciousness is like a wave on an infinite ocean of consciousness. When this truth begins to sink in, relationships change. Other people are no longer objects to manage, fix, or defeat. They are expressions of the same field of awareness that you are.

Technology can either obscure or reveal this shared being. It obscures it when we use it to perform, compare, and attack. It reveals itself when we use it to listen, to offer support, and to remember our common humanity across distance and difference. A simple message of genuine care, a listening presence on a video call, an online group devoted to healing rather than arguing — these are not trivial. There are ways in which the ocean remembers itself through the waves.

Awakening in the age of AI does not mean going offline. It means bringing the light of awareness into every tap, scroll, and typed reply. When you remember that awareness is primary and technology is secondary, AI becomes what it actually is: an extension of human intelligence, guided moment by moment by your intention.

Mini Practice: One Question Before You Tap

  1. Before opening a social app or AI tool, pause for one breath and feel your body.
  2. Silently ask, “From what state of mind am I entering this?” (anxious, lonely, curious, caring).
  3. Then ask, “What is one small way I can use the next few minutes to support connection or understanding — for myself or someone else?”
  4. Let this answer shape what you click, write, or search for.

Namaste,

Deepak
