The Gift of Awakening: An Invitation

You have a birthright you haven’t received, a hidden gift that can never be taken away. In this holiday season, let’s begin a journey to reclaim this gift, which is known as awakening. No one else can open it for you, because awakening is wrapped up in every moment of your experience. When fully awake, you meet who you really are. This is the only path to who you are meant to be.

I believe that we can get there together. In two weeks, I will begin to guide The Year of Awakening, the only time I’ve initiated such a large-scale project. The aim is to give the experience of awakening every week. So far as I know, this is a unique undertaking, but the time is right. Spiritual knowledge has never been more accessible. What people want now is spiritual experience, which has been too rare.

Everyone has glimpses of the light, in moments of love, joy, compassion, and inner peace. Over the coming year, you can start living in the light. Your awareness was designed for this. Willingness and openness make all the difference.

It has been a source of deep regret for me that the tradition of waking up, which goes back centuries, often falls outside everyday life. It shouldn’t. No special ability is involved. Awakening consists of two natural steps. First, you notice that you are asleep. Second, you open your awareness to whatever is in front of you.

“Asleep” is the traditional image for being unconscious, in other words, tuning out, not noticing, being distracted or stressed. Modern life confronts us with an overload of all those things. The answer isn’t to fight against them but to devote yourself to awakening. Even though awakening belongs to every Eastern spiritual tradition, the process is universal. If approached correctly, it is also effortless.

Right now, wherever you happen to be, bring your attention to the smallest thing around you. It could be the play of sunlight in a tree, the sound of a distant car, the feeling of your breath moving in and out.

In that simple act of noticing, a quiet truth reveals itself. Awareness doesn’t need permission to shine. It doesn’t ask you to solve a theory or master a concept. It only asks for a moment of openness — a pause long enough for light to enter.

Even the most ordinary perception becomes different when you allow it. A ray of sunlight on your table, a shadow moving across the floor, the near silence between two sounds. These are not symbols or metaphors. They are invitations. The light that reveals them is the same light that reveals your true self.

Nothing in the Year of Awakening will ask you to become someone else or travel to distant philosophical terrain. The journey is always homeward. Awakening is not an achievement. It is the ease of being aware, here and now, in the smallest moments — the ones we overlook until they gently call us back.

There’s a gentle promise in Taoism that goes like this: “When you let go of who you are, you become who you might be.” The teaching is profound: Let awakening happen. Next year we will experience it together. If you do nothing more than pause once in a while to notice a simple act of seeing or hearing or breathing, the light will do the rest. It always has.

Namaste,

Deepak
