Merging with the Flow: Letting Life Express Itself Through You

By Deepak Chopra, MD

As a concept with wide appeal, “the flow” represents a lifestyle shift with many implications. At its core is a way of meeting life with openness rather than fixed beliefs, acceptance instead of resistance, and relaxation instead of tension. In a stressful world, going with the flow holds obvious appeal as a better alternative.

We could call this the psychological level of flow, and it has real benefits. But to grasp the deeper, life-changing implications of flow, the spiritual dimension matters even more. In the Vedic tradition of India, the model centers on the very nature of awareness. Merging with the flow depends on how fully you understand and accept certain core principles of consciousness.

The Reality of Flow

The first and most important principle is that personal awareness is an expression of an infinite field of consciousness. You are able to organize your life because consciousness itself is organized at the source. The closer you are to the source, the more aligned your life will be with the flow.

But the flow of what? If you close your eyes and sit quietly, there is a continuous flow of thoughts, images, and feelings in the active mind, which is set against a silent background that never changes. This setup isn’t enough to account for flow in the spiritual sense, however, which reaches much deeper.

The flow that supports human life is what you must connect with in order to experience the most important values that awareness offers, namely love, compassion, empathy, insight, truth, beauty, creativity, and spiritual experiences.

When you aren’t in the flow, your daily existence will still contain glimpses of these higher values, but you cannot say with certainty that you are protected from hurdles, obstacles, resistance, setbacks, and failures that represent the very opposite of flow.

Embracing Creative Intelligence

A life dominated by stress and disappointment makes it easy to conclude that flow is a myth, or at best an on-again, off-again experience. But the Vedic sages likened this to clouds passing over the face of the sun. The clouds create the illusion that the sun isn’t constantly shining. In the same way, interruptions in the flow create the mistaken impression that the field of consciousness isn’t continuously aware of you and everything else in creation.

Instead of pursuing life’s higher values one at a time, the Vedic teaching held that the flow must be embraced as a whole, as an uninterrupted flow of creative intelligence. Leaving aside any spiritual implications, every cell in your body depends on an uninterrupted flow of food and oxygen to survive, but more basically, it depends on a flow of information coded in DNA.

The purpose of this information is to be life-supporting, which the Vedic tradition expands far beyond biology. Creative intelligence can be defined as the total support that consciousness provides to its own creations.

A Radical Revision of Creativity

In that light, creativity isn’t simply artistic activity but the essence of who you really are, an ever-renewing expression of the flow in every dimension — mind, body, and spirit. The name attached to the flow of creative intelligence in Sanskrit is Dharma, whose root is the verb “to uphold.” In other words, whatever supports human awareness is an offshoot of the cosmic support overseen by Dharma.

The practical implications of this idea come into focus when flow is accepted as a conscious choice. In place of habit, routine, fixed beliefs, old conditioning, and the pull of past memories, you cultivate a willingness to let the flow guide you spontaneously from one experience to the next.

Entering a More Creative State

Like your body, your awareness is designed to become more mature naturally. There comes a time when you feel less pulled by circumstances and more drawn to depth. The inner author is more awake and less hypnotized by old plot lines of ambition, struggle, and self‑image.

Instead of asking, “What more can I achieve?” the deeper question becomes, “What wants to express itself through me now?” That’s the primary evidence that you are starting to embody creative intelligence as a conscious choice.

From this perspective, every moment is an opportunity for renewal, not as an abstract ideal but as a realization that the flow itself is always new. There is no reason why you should be any different. Creativity is no longer a special talent reserved for a few; it is simply the way life moves when you stop today from being a repeat of yesterday.

Letting Go to Make Space

When you stop defending the person you think you have to be, you create space for creative intelligence to fill. Merging with the flow in this way requires only the willingness to let go of old stories, roles, and preconceptions. Once you announce this willingness to yourself, a falling away begins of what no longer serves you creatively.

On an evolutionary path, two movements unfold at once: what is non-evolutionary diminishes, and what is progressive increases. You are becoming and releasing at the same time.

Daily Experiments in the Flow

The critical step is the first one, changing your expectations. The flow of creative intelligence is already supporting you at every point of fulfillment. An experience of obstacles, resistance, and setbacks can be turned around at the level of awareness by replacing the behavior that is ruled by unconscious conditioning and habits.

You might consider experimenting with the flow to see if it works. For example,

  • Offer a new response in an old situation: where you usually argue, listen; where you withdraw, reveal one honest sentence instead.
  • Turn a familiar role into a fresh practice: grandparent, colleague, neighbor, partner — ask, “How can love move differently through this role today?”
  • Add a small act of service to your ordinary routine: a check‑in call, a word of appreciation, a moment of silent blessing for a stranger.
  • Experiment with attention: spend a few minutes each day noticing one ordinary object or interaction as if seeing it for the first time, letting it show you something new.

The Soul at Play

When you join the flow, creativity becomes less about performance and more about play. In the Vedic tradition, cosmic consciousness has no agenda. Instead, it unfolds as the play of Lila — a cosmic dance, but also an emblem of how life unfolds from the source.

Awakening to the reality that your soul is at play marks a major step in personal evolution. Life is not asking you to prove yourself but to express yourself as the channel for creative intelligence.

In this spirit, the coming years, however many they are, can feel calm, reflective, and optimistic. Each day remains what it has always been: a fresh opportunity for renewal in the flow, another chance for consciousness to surprise itself through you.

Namaste,

Deepak
